Water use efficiency

Advancements in irrigation and awareness about the value of water and its consequences have decreased water wastage. The entire sector including the industry has improved the water use efficiency from 2015 onwards. The average water use efficiency increase in all the sectors is above 9% in the last ten years. The maximum improvement of 15% is in the industrial sector. This is possible by adopting less water-intensive technologies and methods and recycling the wastewater generated from various processes.

The agricultural sector has improved water use efficiency by 8% globally. This is possibly due to advanced irrigation tools and techniques such as drip, sprinklers, airdrop, multi-door, and underground irrigation systems. Affordable advancement in irrigation methods has been widely accepted and practised for the last two decades. In addition, the water requirement of a specific crop has improved the economic benefits to farmers. For example, advanced irrigation systems such as drip and micro-sprinkler systems, and practices like fertigation (combining fertilization and irrigation) were adopted by Israel. These innovations have enabled Israel to achieve high agricultural productivity with minimal water use.

Awareness programs of various agencies, authorities, and stakeholders have played a major role in cutting water wastage. For example the public water conservation campaigns by the “UNO Environment Programme”. The increase in water use efficiency in the service sector is about 8% since 2015.

Conclusion

Over the past few decades, concerns over water scarcity have intensified possibly due to climate change, population growth, and increasing demand across various sectors. However, amidst these challenges, a significant and promising increase in water use efficiency continues. This improvement represents a critical step towards achieving sustainable water management and ensuring the availability of this vital resource for future generations. It reflects a convergence of technological innovation, effective management practices, supportive policies, and heightened public awareness. As we move forward, embracing these principles and prioritizing water efficiency will be crucial in safeguarding this vital resource and fostering a sustainable future for all.
