Air Quality Index (AQI) is calculated based on the concentration of air pollutants, human health concerns, and ambient standards. AQI simplifies the complex information into a unitless number to facilitate an air pollution alert system. Further, AQI is simplified using a color-code system to make it useful for common people. Use this air quality index calculator to convert air pollutants into AQI.
Interpretation of AQI
AQI Values | AQI Categories | Color Code | Associated Health Impact and Advisory |
---|---|---|---|
0-50 | Good | Green | It may have minimal impact. |
51-100 | Satisfactory or Moderate | Yellow | It may cause breathing discomfort to people with lung diseases such as asthma and distress to people with heart disease, children, and older adults. Therefore, sensitive people should limit prolonged outdoor activity. |
101-200 | Moderately polluted or Unhealthy for sensitive people | Orange | It may cause respiratory illness in people with prolonged exposure. Moreover, the effect may be more pronounced in people with lung and heart diseases. Therefore, sensitive people should avoid all physical activity and others should limit outdoor exertion. |
201-300 | Poor or Unhealthy | Red | It may cause breathing discomfort to people on prolonged exposure and discomfort to people with heart disease. Therefore, sensitive people should avoid prolonged outdoor activity others should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. |
301-400 | Very Poor or Very Unhealthy | Purple | It may cause respiratory illness in people with prolonged exposure. The effect may be more pronounced in people with lung and heart diseases. Therefore, sensitive people should avoid all physical activity and others should limit outdoor exertion. |
>401 | Severe or Hazardous | Maroon | It may cause respiratory effects even on healthy people and serious health impacts on people with lung/heart diseases. The health impacts may be experienced even during light physical activity. Therefore, everyone should avoid all physical activity outdoors including sensitive people. |
